Food Allergies: The Hidden Cause Of Chronic Illness PDF Print E-mail

Food AllergiesUnsuspected delayed food allergies and food intolerance underlie many chronic illnesses and symptoms of poor health.  Unfortunately these food reactions are “hidden” in the sense that the food reactions that caused the symptoms or illness do not happen immediately after eating the offending food and then these same symptoms last for long periods of time. These delayed and prolonged reactions thus hide the relationship between the food and the problem.

These foods reactions are different from the classic food allergic reaction of anaphylaxis that happens immediately with eating. Detection with skin testing does not identify these foods and many people are then told by their allergist or primary care doctor that food is not the problem. Fortunately these foods can be identified with either blood testing or using a specific elimination diet protocol. Common symptoms and illness that food reactions can play a major role in include the following:

  • Digestive: Irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, gas, bloating, nausea.
  • Immune: Frequent childhood ear infection.
  • Neurologic: Headaches, hyperactivity, fatigue, anxiety, depression.
  • Respiratory: Sinusitis, asthma, environmental allergies
  • Cardiac: Irregular heart rate and palpitations
  • Orthopedic: Fibromyalgia, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis arthritis, muscle aches
  • Endocrine: PMS, weight gain
  • Skin: Eczema, hives, acne

Once the offending foods are eliminated and the symptoms improve, or the illness stops, these foods can eventually be eaten on a limited rotational basis. Treatment also needs to be focused on digestive function to normalize intestinal micro flora and enhance digestive enzyme and hydrochloric acid function. This ensures foods are digested well to further lesson the potential for adverse reactions.
